The senior writer is a key contributor on the DEVAR communications and marketing team who assists with achieving the fundraising and alumni engagement goals of Development & Alumni Relations (DEVAR) by creating marketing and communication materials that promote a compelling brand for the university, with an emphasis on helping to build UC Davis’ private philanthropic identity, one that will drive continuous, loyal support for the university now and in the coming years. Under the supervision of the assistant director of Marketing and Communications for Development and Alumni Relations, the senior writer will: Create and execute multiple, strategic communications pieces designed to build the philanthropic brand, increase contributions, steward donors and build alumni and parent engagement. Identify original story and video leads from across UC Davis; develop creative plans for coverage and pitch to the Marketing and Communications content team. Research and contribute fresh, creative concepts for new communications at team brainstorming sessions. Write top-level communication materials including press releases, feature stories, video scripts, web content, social media content, brochures and advertisements that will be distributed to a variety of audiences including all alumni, parents and/or the UC Davis donor base (individual, foundation and corporate donors and donor prospects). Collaborate with the UC Davis Office of Strategic Communications to write philanthropic or alumni-related material, including scripts, for university wide initiatives. Write all UC-system outreach pieces going to the Office of the President and the Regents. Respond to executive requests for critical-need communications with quick turnaround and minimal editing required. Serve as the trainer and mentor for the team’s student writer. Provide on-site communications support during select donor events. Project manage multiple working relationships with internal and external photographic, video, design and web talent to create thoughtful and well-orchestrated communications materials. Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or other related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience creating imaginative and persuasive content using editorial and promotional writing skills. Ability to prepare information in appropriate form for diverse audiences and purposes and to understand, use and translate academic and technical terminology and concepts into lay terms. Spelling, punctuation, grammar and proofreading skills to write and edit documents for accuracy, consistency of format and professional appearance and style. Experience interviewing diverse subjects with professionalism and discretion; verifying factual accuracy of information through basic research; integrating feedback on drafts from multiple stakeholders. Experience working with a marketing team, including editors, other writers, graphic designers, web editors, social media experts, videographers and photographers. Substantial interpersonal and oral communication skills to collaborate effectively with a variety of people and integrate feedback on written work from multiple stakeholders. Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) : Demonstrated knowledge of development and its role in the advancement of a non-profit institution and skill in determining inspiring, diverse communications to meet institutional advancement objectives and help build a culture of philanthropy. Skills to manage multiple complex project with tight deadlines to deliver a high volume of excellent output with minimal supervision. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Preferred Education/Experience: Demonstrable experience applying the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion to one’s work Experience writing for an institution-wide advancement initiative such as a comprehensive campaign. Experience establishing and maintaining productive working relationships with UC Davis constituencies, donors and alumni. Experience writing web content and familiarity with search engine optimization (SEO). Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) : Comprehensive knowledge of UC Davis and its organizational structure, including undergraduate colleges, professional schools and UC Davis Health. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Background Check This position is a critical position and subject to a background check. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background investigation including criminal history and identity checks.
